Round Mountain Swings: Photo and Instagram Guide
The wooden swings of Round Mountain are the single most photographed object in the eastern Dominican Republic. Half the visitors who climb the hill come for one specific frame, and the difference between an average snap and a portfolio shot is mostly preparation.

The classic swing frame
Stand 6 metres behind the swing, lens at 28 to 35 mm equivalent. Wait until the rider reaches the top of the arc with feet pointed at the horizon. Crop so the rider sits in the upper third and the bay fills the lower two thirds.
If you shoot with a phone, lock exposure on the rider, not on the sky. Slide the brightness down a touch so the turquoise water keeps depth.

Best light windows
Sunrise paints the swings pink for around 20 minutes after the sun clears the eastern hills. Sunset turns the platform gold for about 30 minutes before the sun touches the Atlantic horizon. Midday is harsh but works for high contrast action shots from below the swing.
Cloudy mornings give soft even light across the whole platform. They are the best window for portraits without strong shadows.
Where to stand for the panoramic shot
Walk 80 metres east from the main swing platform. There is a small grass clearing with no fence. From there the view opens to Playa Esmeralda, the village of Redonda and the Samana Peninsula on a clear day.
Frame at 24 mm with one third sky and two thirds land. Include a palm tree on the left side as foreground anchor.
Drone shots and rules
Drone use is allowed by the landowner but limited to early morning before the swings open to crowds. Stay under 60 metres above ground and avoid flying over riders.
The morning calm gives stable flight. Plan a vertical shot looking straight down on the swing arc, with the bay as a turquoise stripe at the bottom of the frame.
Quick tips for groups and couples
For couples on one swing, sit close, keep eye contact on each other not on the camera and let the photographer count the rhythm. The shot fires when both heads pass the horizon line.
For groups, line up at the edge of the platform with the bay behind, not on the swing. Three swings work well with three different couples each.

How many swings are there at Round Mountain?
The main western row has several wooden swings plus a hammock and a couple of framed viewpoints. Only the western ones face Playa Esmeralda and the Samana Bay horizon.
Do you pay extra for the swings?

How long is the queue for the main swing?
Ten to twenty minutes at the 10 am to noon peak, and often no queue at all at the 7 am opening or in the last hour before closing.
Can you fly a drone at Round Mountain?
Drone use is at the discretion of the site staff and is usually restricted when the summit is busy. Ask at the gate rather than assuming, and never fly over the swings while people are on them.
