El Seibo province guide

El Seibo is one of the 31 provinces of the Dominican Republic, located in the east of the country, just north of La Romana and west of La Altagracia (the Punta Cana province). The provincial capital is Santa Cruz de El Seibo and the main coastal town is Miches.

Most international travelers never hear about El Seibo because they fly straight to Punta Cana and stay in Bavaro. But Round Mountain, Playa Esmeralda, Playa Limon and the Coastal Boulevard all sit in this province. This page is a short primer on what El Seibo is and why it matters.

Geography and demographics

El Seibo covers 1,786 square kilometers, mostly cattle ranches and sugar cane fields inland, with the Cordillera Oriental hills rising in the north toward Miches. Population is around 90,000, with most people living in Santa Cruz de El Seibo, Miches and the smaller town of Pedro Sanchez. It is one of the less densely populated provinces of the country.

Santa Cruz de El Seibo

The provincial capital is an inland colonial town with a 16th century Spanish church (San Pedro Apostol), one of the oldest in the Americas. It is 90 minutes inland from Punta Cana, off the main tourist route, and most travelers skip it. Worth a 1 hour stop if you are driving the inland route to Santo Domingo.

Miches and the Esmeralda Coast

Miches is the main coastal town of El Seibo and the gateway to the Esmeralda Coast. The Round Mountain (Montana Redonda) viewpoint, Playa Esmeralda and Laguna Redonda are all within El Seibo province. The 2020 Coastal Boulevard runs along the coast and connects Miches with Punta Cana in under 2 hours.

Cattle country and rural Dominican Republic

Inland El Seibo is real working Dominican countryside, cattle ranches, sugar cane, palm groves and small villages. Rodeos and cattle fairs in Hato Mayor and Santa Cruz de El Seibo are big regional events in late spring. Travelers looking for an authentic non-resort Dominican Republic find more here than in Bavaro.

How to visit El Seibo

Most people experience El Seibo as a half-day from Punta Cana, going to Round Mountain and the Esmeralda Coast. A full day trip can add Playa Limon and the El Seibo town colonial church. A 2 to 3 day stay in Miches town is the deeper option for travelers who want a quiet Dominican Republic break.

The simplest first taste of El Seibo for a Punta Cana visitor is the Round Mountain half-day tour, which crosses the new Coastal Boulevard and stops at the most photographed spot in the entire province.
